Riding across the Nevada desert

Nevada! you’re really hot and dry!

Across the Nevada

On twin shiny Electra Glides (2014 model) with Chantal as my pillion and Ronnie as my buddy riding the other motorcycle, we set off on a journey of freedom, adventure, and most of all, fun! Our first day ride started later than planned. We hit the road at noon, in the midst of the hot, dry Nevada desert heat. After almost eight hours of riding in extreme conditions, we ended up in Monument Valley in Arizona at around 9 pm. Thankfully Eagle Riders had taken care of our accommodations and bookings in advance.

On a Highway to Hell!

I won’t deny that the first few hours of riding on that summer’s day were scorching as hell! We were about to hit a critical dehydration level when we came across a gas station in the middle of nowhere. That’s where we had our first stop around one hour after leaving Las Vegas. The three of us soaked our shirts and cooling vests in cold water and kept them in one of the ice freezers, which were outside the station restaurant, until we were ready to get back on our rides. At the station, we washed our heads and helmets, drank a lot of water and soft drinks and rested for almost 45 minutes until we regained our normal body temperature and confidence. It was one unforgivable mistake – riding under the burning sun in temperatures of almost 122°F (50° Celsius).

From Burning Hot Weather to Freezing Cold

Driving under this heat was so hard that we had to stop every hour for a break, at least until the sun’s heat took refuge behind the mountains and the temperature began to cool down. Little by little, the absence of the sun’s heat and the slightly more bearable temperature allowed us to feel more comfortable within ourselves and we regained our smiles. Little did we know that the desert’s burning heat in the day is swiftly followed by a sudden drop in temperature after dark. We went from burning hot weather to freezing cold night as we headed for our hotel destination.

A Lesson We Learned the Hard Way

The first day taught us a precious lesson that we took to heart. On a brighter note, we witnessed one of most amazing sunsets which took place three hours before we reached our destination at the Kayenta Monument Valley Inn.

On our next ride we will explore the Monument Valley National Reserve and ride into the winding roads of the Petrified Forest National Reserve. Stay tuned for more road adventure. Read more about our 18-day journey across the southern United States by clicking on the links below:
