San Miguel Church Santa Fe

Daydreaming on Texas roads

Straight Ride to El Paso

The next morning, we took our rides around the charming city of Santa Fe and visited some of its oldest churches and shops. We even came across the oldest house in the U.S. which they had converted into an Indian arts and crafts gallery. Unfortunately, it was closed at the time we passed by; I guess it was a bit early in the morning.

We couldn’t wait, however. We had more than 310 miles (500 km) to cover until we reach El Paso, Texas, and we did not wish to repeat the same mistake that we did on day one.

The Road to El Paso

The road to El Paso wasn’t what a true rider enjoys. Riding straight for a long distance under the burning Texas sun put us in a state of daydreaming, where our minds experienced their lowest levels of activity. So, to make things more interesting, we stopped almost every hour for a 10 to 15-minute break just to refresh ourselves and stay alert.

We also topped up with over-the-counter energy shots they sell in gas stations which helped keep tiredness at bay. They had a significant effect, although it was only for a brief period, delivering a sugar rush to energize our system. (I am not suggesting that these shots are good, but it was good that we tried them a few times).

A Late Realization…

We reached Ramada Suites hotel in El Paso around 5:30 pm. With a shock we realized that the hotel had burned down accidentally and was currently undergoing renovation work. It was quite a surprise initially, but after reviewing our plan we noticed that the guy from Eagle Riders had changed the hotel booking and somehow, we hadn’t paid attention to it. Thank goodness our new booking was in a hotel nearby, the Quality Inn. In the evening, we took a short walk, had some Mexican food at La Malinche, which wasn’t as good as we expected it to be.

After Dinner, we hopped over to a nearby cool restaurant and bar called Cabo Joe’s. Considering the long ride, the following day from El Paso to San Antonio, we went straight to bed after enjoying a couple of drinks and a loaded Mexican dinner.

We reached the fourth day of our ride across the southern route of the United States. We started from Las Vegas Nevada, to the Monument Valley in Arizona, across Santa Fe, New Mexico to El Paso Texas. The journey continues and more miles to cross!
