Here comes the rain again
June 27. It was The Day. Chantal’s birthday! Almost five hours away from Panama City, our ride wasn’t as smooth as we expected. Being in Florida at the end of June, we expected dry weather and moderate temperatures. We miscalculated. Our worst fears manifested themselves in reality; here comes the rain again. Although the scenery was amazing, and the roads were in perfect condition for riding, intermittent showers accompanied us until we reached our accommodation in Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham in Jacksonville.
For the first time in our journey we felt tired, a little stressed and somewhat disappointed by the weather. After a warm shower, we washed away our worries and re-found our energy. After all, it was Chantal’s Birthday!! We ordered some Chinese food for room service and pampered our taste buds. Just before I had completely given up, there was a knock on our door, and guess what – a birthday cake and a bottle of champagne finally manifested themselves! It was time to celebrate the long-awaited birthday.
(Long story short, I managed to contact the hotel manager in Jacksonville long before our trip to the U.S. and ordered the cake and the bottle of champagne in advance. Poor guy, it seems he forgot, so he had to go out in torrential rain to the nearest bakery to get the stuff. Luckily, I was there to remind him while checking in. I really appreciated his effort – wish I could remember his name!)
To add a cherry on top we took Uber and headed to the Ritz Bar and Lounge located on Jacksonville Beach where we sipped the best liquor and cocktails until midnight. After a night walk on the sandy beach we headed back with a smile on our face. It was a wonderful place to unwind after a hectic day.
